About OHIP - Ontario Health
Insurance Plan
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
is the provincial government run health plan for Canadians living in
Canada. Every Ontario resident is entitle to free access to emergency
and preventive medical care under OHIP. Residents of Ontario can go to
any participating MD any time they want and the costs are automatically
billed to the government through OHIP. It doesn't cover prescription
drugs or dental care. The Liberal government there recently de-listed
eye exams, chiropractic and physiotherapy, but provisions have been made
for minors.
To become eligible for OHIP, you normally
have to be a Canadian citizen or have a long term immigration status
that is set out by Ontario's Health Insurance Act. You must also make
Ontario as your permanent and principal home and must be physically
present in Ontario at least 153 days in any 12 month period. A waiting
period of 3 months may exist for Canadian citizens or permanent
residents returning to Canada from another country not covered by
OHIP. You may want to get Visitors to Canada
insurance to cover that period. There are several exemptions for that
waiting period, such as for newborns.
