Learn About Your Health & Dental Insurance Options After You Lose Your Job or Leave Employment

What if you lose your job or quit?

In today’s world, many employees are leaving their positions or being impacted by company decisions to terminate employment or by general layoffs. Whatever the reason you leave your employer, you may or may not get an extension of health and dental coverage for you and your dependent family members. Some employers will provide a few months of coverage and then you are on your own. Here are some examples where people might get guaranteed issue health and dental coverage:

  • You lost your job due to a layoff
  • You got fired
  • You have become a contractor, and you are terminated from the group insurance plan
  • You have retired
  • You have reached the maximum age of the employer plan
  • You simply quit your job for any number of reasons

What are your health & dental options?

However, before you lose your group insurance coverage or within 60 to 90 days of coverage terminating, you can apply for one of the comprehensive extended health plans offered via HealthCover.ca with just a few steps and NO medical questions or underwriting. Note that you have to be covered by your provincial medical plan and be a resident in that province.

Here is the best individual health plan for Canadians leaving employment:

There are several plan levels to choose from, along with a great travel medical and rewards option. You can apply as long as you meet their standard requirements, such as being a Canadian resident, applying within 90 days of your group health plan end date, and your group health policy is ending soon or has recently come to an end because of career change, job loss or retirement, or because you have reached the maximum age allowed by your group plan.
